I just saw Julia's post on nice guys, and it sparked some memories I thought I'd share on the subject.
In my late teen's and early 20's I was much more shy, and less confident then I am now. I had a hard time meeting women. When I was lucky enough to find a date, I was always sure to go the extra mile. I'd make the perfect plan, bring her flowers, open her door, pay for everything and be a true gentleman.
90% of the time, this resulted in the woman telling me what a great guy I was. How she'd love to see me again and that there weren't guys like me out there. When I called them for a 2nd date..... nothing. No return call, no thank you, no nothing.
One night I was lucky enough to score a date with this asian girl named Gina who I'd met at a friends house a few weeks earlier. I asked my friend to hook me up with Gina, and after a week or so I was able to lock it down. I was fucking HYPED to take her out. She was in school for cosmetic's, so I went to the mall where I had a friend that was working at Sephora. She gave me a shit load of new cosmetic's samples to give to Gina. Looking back it may have actually been strange, but shit, I was trying to be a thoughtful dude.
So I pick up Gina and I take her to cheesecake factory. Hey, at the time cheesecake factory was a 5 star fucking restaurant. I spent 50 dollars on our dinner, again at the time it was MAJOR cash. She had recently broken up with a boyfriend or something, but told me that she was excited to start dating again. I was like "Hell yah, I'm fuckin IN". We drive back to her place, at which time I give her the Sephora samples. She seemed very happy, and surprised that I remembered that she was in cosmetics school. She said that it was an aweome gift.
We get out of the car and I walk her to her door. She looks at me and says.. "Look, I had a really good time. Your a really nice guy. Your probably one of the sweetest guy's I've ever met....I'm not going to kiss you because I'm not looking for any kind of relationship right now"
I was fucking devastated and said, "Well then why did you go out with me?"
She goes "I dunno, because I was bored".
After that incident something snapped in me. I had been trying my ass off for the last 3 or 4 years to be as nice and sweet and awesome as possible and it got me NOWHERE, ZERO, NOTHING. I became angry, bitter, jaded. Angry and women, angry at myself for not knowing what women wanted and I just wanted to be left alone. I thought I had been doing it all right. I watched all those sappy 80's & 90's movies about love & romance....wasn't that what women wanted from me???
I didn't want to date. I didn't want to go out searching for chicks with my friends, nothing. I just wanted to live my life and forget about women.
Within about 6 months, I began to meet women VERY easily. I didn't know why... but it became almost effortless. I'd meet a girl, get her number..... go to a bar or somewhere cheap because I was over spending money on dates, and I'd have sex! Then women began to tell me that I was "cool", or that I was "nice but that I had an edge". I really didn't know what I was doing.
As I became older I started to realize that it was a wall. I became more reserved, less interested and committed, and for some reason that was attractive to women. It wasn't intentional, nor was it part of a plan. Hell I still think that I'm a nice dude, but I now admit that having a few girls treat me like an asshole made me the person that I am. I still have that wall, but am much more aware of it now and have a better understanding of the effect to has on people.
We all want to be treated with respect, not get fed lies or have our head's fucked with... But I'm not so sure if women really want nice guys who are just going to constantly worship them. All the nice dudes I know (what's left of them) are still sitting in the same boat rowing in circles. Sometimes I wish I didn't have my walls or my "take it or leave it" attitude... But I definitely believe that being a nice guy got me to that point.
